Here are the installation instructions for the Autolite4A Electronic Ignition Conversion Kit:
Autolite4A Installation Instructions
Tools You Will Need
- Screwdrivers (flathead and Phillips)
- Needle-nose pliers
- Timing light
- Wrench set
Step 1: Prepare the Engine
- Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery to ensure safety during installation.
- Locate the distributor and remove the distributor cap. Set the cap aside, ensuring all wires remain connected to the cap.
Step 2: Remove Old Components
- Remove the rotor from the distributor shaft and set it aside.
- Unscrew and remove the existing breaker points and condenser from the distributor. Keep the screws and washers for reuse during the installation.
- Clean the inside of the distributor, ensuring it is free from grease, oil, and debris.
Step 3: Install the Autolite4A Kit
- Mount the ignition module onto the breaker plate using the provided screws or the original screws.
- Position the sensor precisely over the center of the distributor shaft. Ensure it aligns securely but does not obstruct the rotor’s motion.
- Place the supplied reluctor (magnetic sleeve) over the distributor shaft, aligning it with the shaft’s keyway. Press it down gently until it is firmly seated.
Step 4: Wire the Module
- Connect the module’s red wire to the positive (+) terminal of the ignition coil.
- Connect the module’s black wire to the negative (-) terminal of the ignition coil.
- Route wires carefully to avoid sharp edges, moving parts, or hot surfaces. Secure them with zip ties if needed.
Step 5: Reassemble the Distributor
- Reinstall the rotor onto the distributor shaft.
- Replace the distributor cap, ensuring all wires are properly seated.
Step 6: Adjust Timing
- Reconnect the battery.
- Start the engine.
- Use a timing light to check and adjust the timing according to the manufacturer’s specifications for your engine.
Step 7: Test the System
- Turn off the engine and check all connections to ensure they are tight and secure.
- Start the engine again and verify smooth operation at idle and under load.
Important Notes
- Do not use solid-core spark plug wires with this kit. Use suppression-core or resistor spark plug wires to avoid interference.
- Ensure the ignition coil used is compatible with electronic ignition systems. A coil with too low primary resistance may damage the module.

VERY IMPORTANT — BEFORE ORDERING:
Some distributors of vehicles, boats, etc. may differ, according to whether the stock distributor is still in place or a replacement distributor has been installed. Some otherwise similar or identical engines use different distributor brands and/or different distributor part numbers. We need your distributor’s brand name, distributor part number and number of engine cylinders to ensure that the electronic ignition conversion kit is the correct one for your particular distributor.
If your distributor part number, normally found on the side of the distributor body, is not among those listed on the relevant web page, chances are, the Ready-Fire ignition conversion kit won’t fit your distributor.
It’s imperative that we know your distributor’s brand name, distributor part number and the number of cylinders of your engine. You may need to remove the distributor temporarily, so that you can read the distributor part number from the side of the distributor body. Usually, the side of your distributor will be covered with oil and dirt, so you’ll need to clean it to find the distributor brand name and exact part number.
We can guarantee only that each of our ignition kits will fit a distributor with one of the distributor part numbers listed on its relevant web page. Otherwise, it likely won’t fit. Ready-Fire ignition kits require a 12-volt, negative ground (earth) electrical system.
If you order the wrong electronic ignition conversion kit for your distributor, you’ll need to return it to us, via US Postal Service mail within 30 days from date of purchase. If the ignition kit is in perfect, unused condition, we can accept it as a returned item, within 30 days of purchase, and provide a refund to your PayPal account, less a 20% restocking fee and any international shipping fees, etc., but only if the ignition kit is in pristine, unused condition. Buyer is responsible for shipping and other costs to return the product for credit or exchange.
