Installation Instructions

  1. Preparation
    • Ensure the engine is off and the battery is disconnected.
    • Remove the distributor cap and rotor.
  2. Remove Existing Components
    • Take out the points, condenser, and the entire breaker plate assembly.
  3. Install the Delco6CYL Kit
    • Place the new electronic ignition module where the breaker plate was located.
    • Secure it using the provided hardware.
  4. Wiring
    • Connect the red wire from the module to the positive (+) terminal of the ignition coil.
    • Attach the black wire from the module to the negative (-) terminal of the ignition coil.
  5. Final Steps
    • Reinstall the rotor and distributor cap.
    • Reconnect the battery.
    • Start the engine to verify proper installation.

Important Notes

  • Coil Compatibility: The Delco6CYL ignition kit must be used with a coil that has a minimum of 1.5 Ohms primary resistance.
  • Voltage Check: Ensure that the charging system voltage, measured at the coil’s positive terminal, does not exceed 13.9 volts at any RPM level. If it does, a 1.0-1.7 Ohm ballast resistor must be wired between the coil’s positive terminal and the ignition module’s red wire.

By upgrading to the Delco6CYL Electronic Ignition Conversion Kit, you’ll experience improved engine performance, easier starts, and reduced maintenance.

VERY IMPORTANT — BEFORE ORDERING:

Some distributors of vehicles, boats, etc. may differ, according to whether the stock distributor is still in place or a replacement distributor has been installed. Some otherwise similar or identical engines use different distributor brands and/or different distributor part numbers. We need your distributor’s brand name, distributor part number and number of engine cylinders to ensure that the electronic ignition conversion kit is the correct one for your particular distributor.

If your distributor part number, normally found on the side of the distributor body, is not among those listed on the relevant web page, chances are, the Ready-Fire ignition conversion kit won’t fit your distributor.

It’s imperative that we know your distributor’s brand name, distributor part number and the number of cylinders of your engine. You may need to remove the distributor temporarily, so that you can read the distributor part number from the side of the distributor body. Usually, the side of your distributor will be covered with oil and dirt, so you’ll need to clean it to find the distributor brand name and exact part number.

We can guarantee only that each of our ignition kits will fit a distributor with one of the distributor part numbers listed on its relevant web page. Otherwise, it likely won’t fit. Ready-Fire ignition kits require a 12-volt, negative ground (earth) electrical system.

If you order the wrong electronic ignition conversion kit for your distributor, you’ll need to return it to us, via US Postal Service mail within 30 days from date of purchase. If the ignition kit is in perfect, unused condition, we can accept it as a returned item, within 30 days of purchase, and provide a refund to your PayPal account, less a 20% restocking fee and any international shipping fees, etc., but only if the ignition kit is in pristine, unused condition. Buyer is responsible for shipping and other costs to return the product for credit or exchange.

Ready Fire Delco4CYL Electronic Ignition Conversion Kit Installation Guide For GM/Delco 4-Cylinder Centrifugal-Advance Distributors Kit Overview The Ready Fire Delco4CYL Ignition Kit replaces the outdated breaker points and condenser in your Delco distributor, providing consistent performance, improved fuel efficiency, and maintenance-free operation. What You Need Before Starting
  • A 12-volt, negative ground system
  • A coil with 3.0 Ohms or more primary resistance (e.g., Bosch Black Coil)
  • Basic tools: multimeter, screwdrivers, and rat-tail file
  • A stroboscopic timing light for final timing adjustment
Installation Steps 1. Prepare the Distributor
  1. Disconnect the battery.
  2. Remove the distributor cap and rotor.
  3. Take out the breaker points, condenser, and wires.
  4. Clean the breaker plate thoroughly for proper contact.
2. Install the Ready Fire Module
  1. Place the Ready Fire ignition module on the breaker plate using the provided screws.
  2. Ensure wires have slack and are clear of moving parts. Secure with a small zip tie if necessary.
3. Fit the Magnet Sleeve
  1. Align the magnet sleeve over the distributor shaft lobes.
  2. Rotate gently while pressing down until the sleeve fits snugly.
    • If tight, lightly file the inner edges for a better fit.
    • Do not force the sleeve.
  3. Install the rotor on top of the magnet sleeve, ensuring it locks into place.
4. Wiring Connections
  • Red Wire → Connect to the coil’s positive (+) terminal.
  • Black Wire → Connect to the coil’s negative (-) terminal. Warning: Reversing these wires will damage the ignition module.
5. Voltage Check
  1. Turn the ignition switch ON (engine off).
  2. Use a multimeter to measure voltage at the coil’s positive terminal.
    • Voltage should read 11-13 volts.
    • If voltage exceeds 13.9 volts, install a 1.4 Ohm ballast resistor.
6. Final Timing Adjustment
  1. Reinstall the distributor cap.
  2. Set static timing to 0° TDC (Top Dead Center) for initial startup.
  3. Start the engine. Use a stroboscopic timing light to adjust timing to factory specifications.
  4. Secure the distributor clamp once timing is correct.
Troubleshooting Tips
  • Engine Won’t Start?
    • Verify wiring: red to (+), black to (-).
    • Check coil resistance (minimum 3.0 Ohms).
    • Confirm battery voltage is adequate.
  • Erratic Timing?
    • Ensure magnet sleeve is seated properly.
    • Verify the rotor and distributor cap are in good condition.
